Day 1
Early morning start (7 AM) for a long drive. Via
Masaka, Mbarara we reach Kabale for lunch. From here the bad road
takes us through a beautiful landscape called the "Switzerland
of Africa". We pass mountains, hills and lakes with cultivated
terraces, tropical rainforest and bamboo forest. On the last hill
the landscape unfolds beneath us, in the vast plane of Uganda, Rwanda
and Congo the Virunga volcanoes dominate the view. Down is Kisoro
where we will stay in the famous Travellers Rest Hotel.
Just outside Kisoro, this unique hotel offers a
cozy stay for the tourists, who come to see the endangered mountain
gorilla. The hotel, built in a somewhat colonial style, and entirely
renovated in 1999, has a comfortable ambiance. In the sixties the
famous American ‘gorilla-woman’ Dian Fossey visited Hotel
Travellers Rest many, many times to do paperwork, to relax or to meet
people. Fossey said about the hotel: ,,It was my second home".
Day 2
Gorilla tracking/Mountain climbing/Village walk.
The day of Gorilla tracking (it can also be on day 3 depending on
the availability of the permits). From Travellers Rest in Kisoro it
is 1 hour by car to the starting point in Rwanda and 55 minutes to
Magahinga (this group is noe closed because the Gorillas crossed to
Congo and have not returned yet for over 8 months) and 1 hour to Nkuringo
group in South Bwindi.
Day 3
Gorilla tracking/Mountain climbing/Village walk. The
Virunga Volcanoes offer a good opportunity to climb their peaks or
to have a nice walk through the tropical rainforest and bamboo forest
on theirs slopes. Most challenging is the perfect shape cone of the
Muhavura Volcano ( 4127 m). Walks around Kisoro town will give you
a view of the village life.
Day 4
To Nyungwe Forest. At 07.30 (06.30 Rwanda time!)
we will leave for the border on our travel to Nyungwe Forest. Via
Ruhengeri we will reach Butare for lunch. Butare has a very nice museum,
well worth a visit! After lunch we will continue to Nyungwe Forest.
The tarmac road takes us across the whole forest, with beautiful viewings
of the park and the surrounding hills. We will stay at the ORTPN guesthouse
or the campsite within the park.
Day 5
At Nyungwe Forest. Nyungwe Forest is one of the
most biologically rich Afro montane forests remaining in central Africa.
It is home to 13 types of primate, over 275 species of birds of which
25 are endemic, 270 species of trees and shrubs, 100 varieties of
orchids and a suite of large mammals including elephants, leopards,
servals, golden cats, bush pigs and black-fronted duiker.
In the forest is a network of 50 km of forest hiking
trails. These footpaths access a divers array of plant and animal
live, access to numerous waterfalls and provide the hiker with dramatic
panoramic views. There are 10 marked trails and the experienced guides
will let you see and know the wonders of the African Tropical rainforest.
An eldorado for hikers and nature lovers!
Day 6
To Akagera National Park. Early morning departure
to Akagera national park. From the high altitudes of Nyungwe Forest
(3000 m) we gradually go down to the valley where the Akagera river
meanders and creates a beautiful landscape of lakes, marsh, hills
and all the living animals in it. When we reach in time we will do
a late evening game drive.
Day 7
At Akagera National Park. The whole day of game
drives in the park. Although it has not the amount of animals found
in other big game parks in Africa, it has a great variety of animals
to see: elephants, zebra, giraffe, buffalo and many more. In the lakes
there are many hippos, crocodiles and a diversity of water birds.
It is possible to camp anywhere in the park and to make hikes in the
park. Very soon they will also start again with boat rides on the
lakes and the Akagera river.
